Thoughts at the End of Time on What is a Human?
People have believed for centuries that the world would end soon. Now, finally, they may be right. The Sixth Great Extinction (human caused this time) is upon us and humans are likely to go with the other creatures they are driving to extinction. It is obviously long past time to stop business as usual, though that is just what, for the most part, our institutions, including our academic ones, continue to do, business as usual.
We humans are partly in this mess, because we have never really understood what human beings are and, thus, our institutions and societies are built for some other sort creature that what humans are. A number of areas in science—aided and abetted by art—are converging to finally tell us what a human is. It may be too late. If people think it is not too late, then they certainly should base their proposed course of new action on a good idea of what humans are—and, indeed, what life is, something else we have gotten largely wrong. If you do believe it is too late, it is fascinating to know who we are even as we may disappear at our own hands.
In any case, you asked me to give a talk, so this is what you get.
Pensamientos al final de los tiempos: ¿Qué es un ser humano?
La gente ha creído durante siglos que el mundo se acabaría pronto. Ahora, finalmente, puede que tengan razón. La Sexta Gran Extinción se nos viene encima. Esta vez causada esta vez por los humanos. Es probable que los humanos se acerquen a otras criaturas que se están dirigiendo esa extinción. Obviamente, ya es hora de detener lo que hacíamos habitualmente. En cualquier caso, eso es justo lo que, como siempre, la mayor parte de nuestras instituciones continúan haciendo – incluidas las académicas.
Los humanos estamos, en parte, en este lío. Nunca hemos entendido realmente qué son los seres humanos y, por lo tanto, nuestras instituciones y sociedades están construidas para algún otro tipo de criatura, algo diferente de lo que se ha considerado humano. Varias áreas de la ciencia, ayudadas e incitadas por el arte, convergen para decirnos, finalmente, qué es un ser humano. Puede que sea demasiado tarde. Si la gente piensa que no es demasiado tarde, entonces ha de apoyar sus acciones en una buena idea sobre quiénes son los humanos, sobre qué es la vida. Han de considerar algo más que aquello en lo que nos hemos equivocado. Por el contrario, si cree que es demasiado tarde, es fascinante saber quiénes somos, incluso cuando sean nuestras propias manos las que nos hagan desaparecer.
